RACE RULES / ETIQUETTE

Triathlon BC is the governing body of sport for triathlon & duathlon events.  Rules have been established by Triathlon Canada & Triathlon BC in order to keep athletes, spectators & volunteers safe during a triathlon event.  It is the responsibility of all athletes participating in the Walnut Grove Triathlon to be informed of & follow the rules listed by Triathlon BC as well as all pertinent information provided to athletes by the Walnut Grove Triathlon organizing committee.

Triathlon Canada Rules are available online at :

Triathlon Canada Race Rules

Some highlights of the rules & Walnut Grove Triathlon etiquette are as follows:

  • Athletes will: practice good sportsmanship at all times, be responsible for their own safety & the safety of others, know, understand & follow competition rules, obey traffic regulations & instructions from race officials, treat other athletes, officials, volunteers & spectators with respect & courtesy, avoid the use of abusive language, inform a technical official after withdrawing from the race.

  • Triathlons are strenuous. To be able to compete, athletes should be in excellent physical condition. Their health and welfare is of paramount importance. By entering in a race, the athlete declares that they are in good health and are in appropriate physical condition to complete the race.  Time limits for the swim leg, bike leg and overall finish time will be established for each competition.

  • Tri BC Members must provide their Tri BC membership card at race package pickup & on race day.

  • Bare torsos are not permitted on the race course.

  • Bicycle helmets must be on athlete's head & secured by chin strap prior to athlete removing their bike from the bike rack.  Helmets must stay on athlete's head & secured by chin strap until their bike has been returned to the bike rack upon completing the bike portion of the event.

  • Athletes are required to exit the transition area upon the transition area closing for the race meeting prior to the start of the race.  (please note: race announcer Steve King will announce to all athletes to clear the transition area, please exit quickly in order to start the race promptly).  You will not be permitted back into the transition area once it has closed.

  • Athlete's must walk/run their bikes to the mount line before mounting their bike to begin riding the race course.  Athletes must dismount their bikes upon completing the bike portion of the event at the dismount line.  Volunteers will be present to remind you of the mount/dismount line located just outside of the transition area.

  • Athlete's must rack their bikes on the bike rack corresponding with their race bib number.  Athlete's are not permitted to move another competitors bike and/or other belongings.  There is limited space for athlete belongings in the transition area, please be sure to keep your items organized & avoid interfering with other athlete's space allotment.  If you are asked to downsize your transition area footprint by a transition area volunteer or race official, please do so promptly.

  • Athletes are not permitted to clear their belongings from the transition area until the final athlete finishing the event has crossed the finish line and the transition area volunteers have indicated that belongings including bikes can be removed from the transition area.  Our goal is keep every athlete's personal items safe during the event.  Your race bib number will be required to enter & exit the transition area.

Please Note: On race day, an athlete liaison will be present in the transition area to answer any questions you may have regarding the event.
